Here is an important and lavishly beautiful new study of the discovery, appreciation, recognition and selection of fine bronze statuary created during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Art Bronzes presents over 1,100 illustrations, 200 in full color, and many pages of carefully researched text with relevant marks, inscriptions, artist signatures, dates, and foundry stamps. Over 450 well-and lesser-known artists in Romantic, Animal, Oriental, Frontier, Victorian, and Exotic styles working in Europe, Asia and the Americas are represented. Dealers, collectors, artists, and art historians all will find inspiration and important, newly discovered information in Art Bronzes.

Homosexuality has always existed, but for centuries artists have felt compelled to codify its expression in their work, in essence hiding it from the public eye. In this dazzling and highly original book, Dominique Fernandez takes a close look at artistic works from the past centuries — from rites of passage into manhood and representations of the hero, to the pantheon of pagan gods and the image of the lesbian — to show how the most powerful representations of homosexuality have emerged from conditions of secrecy and even repression.

Art and Political Expression in Early China

Powers examines the art and politics of the Han dynasty (206 B.C. - 200 A.D.) and shows that both were influenced by the rise of an educated, non-aristocratic public who questioned the authority of the ruling class at all levels. The Han dynasty saw the establishment of many innovations in Chinese history and art, says Powers. As the first stable empire in China, the Hans incorporated a new bureaucratic system of government, implemented a meritocratic standard of official performance, and made available to commoners a greater number of resources and social prerogatives than they had ever had before - including freedom of political expression and social criticism. In this same period, Chinese art began to incorporate figure painting, narrative painting, and genre scenes for the first time, and landowners, lacking noble or official rank, began commissioning large-scale monuments that challenged rather than supported the status quo. Tracing issues of political expression in Han pictorial art, Powers examines the design and construction of local tombs and shrines, their mural schemes, subject matter, and style. He analyzes the rhetoric of social criticism seen in written work such as stone inscriptions, critical essays, and official memorials and shows how a similar rhetoric can be seen in the visual arts. Placing major trends in artistic taste within a narrative of political rivalries, Powers here reconstructs the existence and nature of a public that rejected the cultural standards of the feudal courts and established an alternative culture that influenced politics, taste, ideology and the visual arts.

For twenty years, Gene and Rebecca Tobey worked together as husband and wife and artistic partners. They are best known for their creations of ceramic and bronze sculptures of abstracted animal forms. In their art, bear, buffalo, elk, and other majestic animals stand in dynamic, timeless attitudes.
Their work is a sculptural statement about the dominant personality of the animal. Magic occurs as the sculptures' surfaces become canvases upon which the Tobeys have carved, drawn, painted, and scratched graffito drawings of other animals, human figures, scenes of starry night skies, mountain ranges, and symbols and geometric shapes, all on beautifully patinated surfaces. In the pages of Partners in Art, Rebecca Tobey shares her insights into their creative and collaborative process and shows the creations she and Gene forged during their two-decade partnership. In 2006 Gene Tobey passed away after battling leukemia. Rebecca Tobey lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and continues their legacy of creation and spirit.

Concepts in space
Italian artist Lucio Fontana tore apart the modern art establishment—literally. Trained initially as a sculptor, Fontana (1899-1968) blurred the lines between painting and sculpture by creating works that combined both form and color in a spatial context, most famously exemplified by his slashed canvases of the 1950s and 60s. Fontana’s work was truly conceptual, in that the ideas he wanted to express were more important than the actual work itself; with titles like Concetto Spaziale (Spatial Concept) and Scultura Spaziale (Spatial Sculpture), his pieces served as visual explanations of his ideas. From his early work in collaborating with architects through his years in Buenos Aires (where, in the mid-1940s, he published the famous "White Manifesto" and "Technical Manifesto of Spatialism," among others), his experimental light installations of the early 1950s, and his later experiments with various media, this book covers the entire career of Italy’s pioneering abstract artist.

For fourteen years, Nek Chand secretly transported thousands of stones by bicycle from the Himalayan foothills to a secluded, government-owned jungle clearing. There he combined them with urban debris—corroded wires, sheet metal, bicycle parts, tubes, tires, multicolored tissue, glass and feathers—to make statuettes. In 1972, authorities stumbled upon his menagerie of elephants, horses, monkeys, birds, and figures and eventually decided to support his project at what is now the second most-visited site in India after the Taj Mahal. Authorative text, an interview, 140 illustrations, and a detailed site map pay homage to this singular fantasy universe. This book is published for the exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum (April 4-September 24, 2006).

George Quasha’s extraordinary sculptures unite natural stones in a state of breathtakingly improbable balance. The stones are not altered physically or bonded in any way; rather, Quasha discovers an unknown axis that brings them into radical alignment. The stones "learn" this state of levity in contrast to their ordinary state of gravity, resulting in a new art form that feels alive with its own individual energy and personality. Here, 37 axial stones are displayed in dazzling full-page color photos. The accompanying text explains not only how the stones were found and eventually came together, but explores the aesthetic, philosophical, spiritual, and practical implications of an art of danger and impermanence. "Action pages" document the process — the repeated setting up, balancing, losing balance, and falling — until the full axial stone is born: a whole being greater and more real than the sum of its parts.

Mother Stone: The Vitality of Modern British Sculpture (Studies in British Art)

In Mother Stone AnneMiddleton Wagner looks anew at the carvings of the first generation of British modernists, a group centered around Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Jacob Epstein. Wagner probes the work of these sculptors, discusses their shared avant-garde materialism, and identifies a common theme that runs through their work and that of other artists of the period: maternity.

Why were artists for three turbulent decades after the First World War seemingly preoccupied with representations of pregnant women and the mother and child? Why was this the great new subject, especially for sculpture? Why was the imagery of bodily reproduction at the core of the effort to revitalize what in Britain had become a somnolent art? Wagner finds the answers to these questions at the intersection between the politics of maternity and sculptural innovation. She situates British sculpture fully within the new reality of “bio-power”—the realm of Marie Stopes, Brave New World, and Melanie Klein. And in a series of brilliant studies of key works, she offers a radical rereading of this sculpture’s main concerns and formal language.

Pigments, corrosion products, and minerals are usually considered separately, either as painting materials or as the deterioration products of metals, even though they are often the same compounds. This 190-year review of the literature on copper and its alloys integrates that information across a broad spectrum of interests that are all too frequently compartmentalized. The author discusses the various environmental conditions to which copper alloy objects may be exposed—including burial, outdoor, and indoor museum environments—and the methods used to conserve them. The book also includes information on ancient and historical technologies, the nature of patina as it pertains to copper and bronze, and the use of copper corrosion materials as pigments.
Chapters are organized primarily by chemical corrosion products and include topics such as early technologies, copper chlorides and bronze disease, the chemistry and history of turquoise, Egyptian blue and other synthetic copper silicates, the organic salts of copper in bronze corrosion, and bronze patinas. A detailed survey of conservation treatments for bronze objects is also provided. Four appendixes cover copper and bronze chemistry, replication experiments for early pigment recipes, a list of copper minerals and corrosion products, and X-ray diffraction studies.
Beginning with David Bernstein's introductory essay on the reception of Cage's music, the volume addresses topics ranging from Cage's reluctance to discuss his homosexuality, to his work as a performer and musician, and his forward-looking, provocative experimentation with electronic and other media. Several of the essays draw upon previously unseen sketches and other source materials. Also included are transcripts of lively panel discussions among some of Cage's former colleagues. Taken together, this collection is a much-needed contribution to the study of one of the most significant American artists of the twentieth century.

Masatoshi shares his insights of a master carver, and more; he welcomes us into his realm of ghosts and goblins, owls and lizards, Kabuki heroes and Edo Period entertainers - all of them brought to life in the carver's descriptions of his own netsuke and in the carvings themselves, each one illustrated in color.

Copper Art Jewelry presents twentieth century designs, especially by the masters Frank Rebajes of New York and Jerry Fells, known as Renoir of California. Popular when newly created in the 1950s, these designs are avidly sought after today. Copper jewelry by other artists and manufacturers are displayed as well, along with related silver and enamel jewelry and useful objects. Enthusiasm for copper items is expanding, and this is the reference that collectors, appraisers, and art dealers have been seeking. Twentieth century styling characterizes the abstract, free-form and whimsical designs in pins, bracelets, necklaces, sets, belts and useful objects which display the artful merits of copper. Over 300 color photographs show hundreds of examples, and the original art work, advertising, identifying marks and anecdotes round out this exhaustive new study. Much of the information about Rebajes and Renoir jewelry has not been available anywhere before.

Memory: Luba Art and the Making of History (African art)

The Luba are one of the oldest recorded tribes in equatorial Africa. A Bantu-speaking people, they had already expanded their empire throughout central Africa by the 9th century AD. Much of this progress was probably due to their advanced skills in metalwork. The Luba had a wide network of kings governed by a central ruler who succeeded through the mother's line. Much more is known about the Luba than many of the other tribes on the African continent due to the way that they used intricate works of art called "lukasa" and other memory devices to record their history. The lukasa is a bead and shell-covered wooden "memory board" that embodies fundamental precepts about Luba kingship. This book recounts the history of the Luba and their culture to the present day and demonstrates the varying ways in which early Luban art is used to memorize the complex structure of sovereign rule within their empire. The book illustrates more than 100 important Luba works in museums and private collections around the world. These illustrations feature royal emblems, including thrones, sceptres and lukasa, dating from the 18th to the early 20th century and bearing patterns, figures and motifs which served, as they do now, as vehicles of historical thought and ideology for the Luba people. Photographs from the 1980s and early archival photographs from the turn of the century show the works in their contexts of royal investitures, divination rites, and secret association dances. Many of the works of art in this publication are accompanied by the narratives of contemporary Luban people, to show how the works help to illicit memory and how memory is a dynamic, creative process. A second level of interpretation is provided by the essays written by scholars in the fields of African cultural history who have worked among the Luba people and acknowledge the role of art as a vehicle for historical inquiry.

New Guinea Art: Masterpieces of the Jolika Collection from Marcia And John Friede

The appeal of New Guinea's art lies in the people's extraordinary resourcefulness and creativity. For centuries, they have made objects in order to communicate with the spirit world. Many pieces, based on myths and ancient religious themes, stand in comparison with the world's great sculptural masterpieces. Some were made in response to health, fertility or rites of passage, others signified individual stature in a village, invoked the end of a mourning ritual or warded off evil and sickness. Everyday objects were just as carefully crafted, including house posts, dishes, canoes or shields. The range of media reflects the natural resources available to the New Guinean: shell, rock, feathers, bone, wood, bark, cloth, sago-leaf, nuts and seeds, human hair, and brilliant colors from natural pigments. Although these objects were never intended to last beyond their immediate function, they have in fact survived for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of years.
This elegant two-volume publication depicts the art of New Guinea in richer detail than ever before. It is a detailed and broad-based survey, drawn from the Jolika Collection of John and Marcia Friede, the world's foremost private collection. Volume I contains the lavish selection of magnificent color plates. Volume II features three essays by noted scholars and an extensive, illustrated catalogue section by John Friede.
Publication will coincide with the reopening in the fall 2005 of the newly renovated de Young museum in San Francisco, an institution with a strong commitment to the arts of the South Pacific. With John and Marcia Friede's generous gift of the collection, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco will become the country's leading center for the study and preservation of New Guinea's art.
Ronald Pennell is arguably the most celebrated engraver of glass working in Britain today. On the world stage, he has been received with the greatest critical acclaim and continues to be rewarded the most prestigious of international prizes. This book provides the first comprehensive survey of Pennell's art. Many of the works illustrated are from public collections, but there are also a substantial number which are now in private collections and therefore not generally accessible. Consequently, the book provides a unique opportunity to review the art of Ronald Pennell and his humorous depictions of fallible humanity.
As a result of rapid technological developments, and our ambivalent attitudes towards aging, health and sickness, medicine has become omnipresent in our lives and society. The ethical and moral questions to be found in the practice of medicine influence our own personal sensibilities and experiences. This book is devoted to the topic of medicine in art history, and features close to 150 works by 57 contemporary artists, including Joseph Beuys, Damien Hirst, Heather Sheehan or Marc Quinn. These works evolved from the artists’ own experiences, their illnesses, their experiments with medical treatments, and their critical dialogues with medicine, and were influenced by their related fears and expectations.

Founded as a backlash against abstract expressionism, minimalism was characterized by simplified, stripped-down forms and materials used to express ideas in a direct and impersonal manner. By presenting objects as simple objects, minimal artists sought to communicate without referring to expressive or historical themes. This critical movement, which began in the 1960s and branched out into land art, performance art, and conceptual art, is still a major influence today.
Art of the Natural World

Prized for over a millennium by Chinese literati, scholars' rocks--stones sculpted by the elements into evocative, richly textured miniature landscapes--have long been objects of contemplation, inspiration, and ever-changing beauty. This succinct, elegantly designed volume offers a meditation by the noted artist and collector Richard Rosenbaum on the philosophy and spirit of Chinese natural art, from scholars' rocks to similarly-fashioned objects in wood, metal, and ceramic--as well as such reverse manifestations as works sculpted to replicate natural art. In a style that is at once informal and passionately engaged, Rosenblum discusses the history and use of natural art, the influence it has had on his own work, and, beyond this, the wider philosophical issues it raises--about artistic perception, the context of an art object, and what ultimately distinguishes and constitutes a work of art. Centuries before Duchamp's snow shovel first hung on a gallery wall, Chinese natural art was challenging received notions about artistic creation and response. A book for scholars, artists, and thinkers alike, Art of the Natural World is an indispensable commentary on the art of nature and the nature of art.

The 18th century's Neoclassicist movement, with its white marble sculptures inspired by the art of the ancient world, has helped Greek art to remain vivid in our memories even today. But the reality of ancient art was entirely different, as surfaces were in fact much more brut. As author Michael Siebler points out, recent findings have revealed that the seemingly perfect bodies of statues and sculptures were very often painted in flamboyant colors and ornaments. Thus ancient Greek art combined a high level of classical identity with an equal amount of sensuality. Despite being viewed in a new light, the beauty of the works of art persists.

Art of Colonial Latin America A&I (Art and Ideas)

For over three hundred years, from the era of Christopher Columbus to the struggles for independence around 1820, Latin America witnessed an artistic flowering of enormous creativity and originality. In a unique way, the art and architecture of Aztec, Inca and Guaraní civilizations blended with those of Europe, North Africa and the Far East. In particular, the Spanish and Portuguese empires in Central and South America created the climate for a flourishing, diverse and distinct version of Renaissance and Baroque culture, produced under utterly different social and geographic conditions from those found in Europe. The products of this unique culture include some of the most lavish and visually arresting works of art and architecture in the world.
In this lively overview of the tremendously rich and varied artistic output of the area from southern Chile to northern California, Gauvin Alexander Bailey discusses viceregal and missionary as well as civic and rural architecture, alongside religious and secular painting, sculpture, metalwork, textiles and ceramics. But he also looks back to pre-colonial influences and concludes with an examination of how twentieth-century artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo interpreted their artistic heritage. Even today, the art of the colonial period remains at the centre of Latin American society, culture and identity. The result is a book that provides a new and comprehensive understanding of all the influences that led to one of the most cosmopolitan artistic outpourings in the whole history of art.

Jewelry and Metalwork in the Arts and Crafts Tradition

This book provides the best study of Arts and Crafts-style jewelry and metalwork to date. Devised late in the 19th century as a reaction to industrialized manufacturing, the Arts and Crafts movement stressed naturalistic materials, designs and techniques. A resurgence of interest in this period has caused prices of items to rise. Collectors are buying Arts and Crafts goods as fast as they come on the market. The book begins with the British movement and traces the roots of this "new art" including its characteristics, materials, motifs, influences and makers' marks. Biographical sketches are provided for over 240 of the most influential British designers/jewelers/metalworkers, with discussions of the guilds, schools and commercial firms. The chapters move on to show the connection between the British movement and the European movements, including Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Wiener Werkstatt, and Scandinavian as well as American Arts and Crafts movements. Similarities, differences and inter-relationships are discussed and illustrated with the work of many individual craftsmen and -women. In over 700 photographs, nearly 400 in glorious color, the success of these designs to provide fascinating and beautiful objects is demonstrated. The price guide will be of use to all.

The Art of Ceramics: European Ceramic Design 1500-1830 (Bard Graduate Centre for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design & Culture)

The great age of European ceramic design began around 1500 and ended in the early nineteenth century with the introduction of large-scale production of ceramics. This beautiful book is the first complete history of European ceramic design and decoration during this period, presenting it not only in art-historical terms but also in the context of the era's social, cultural, economic, and scientific developments.
Howard Coutts considers the main stylistic trends—Renaissance, Mannerism, Oriental, Rococo, and Neoclassicism—as they were represented in such products as Italian Maiolica, Dutch Delftware, Meissen and Sèvres porcelain, Staffordshire, and Wedgwood pottery. He pays close attention to changes in eating habits over the period, particularly the layout of a formal dinner. And he discusses such fascinating topics as the development of ceramics as room decoration, the transmission of images via prints, fashion and marketing of ceramics and other luxury goods, and the intellectual background to Neoclassicism.
Comprehensive, engrossing, and lavishly illustrated, the book is essential reading for anyone interested in ceramics and their history.

Land Art (Basic Art)

The earth as canvas In the mid-60s, artists in the USA and Europe began planning works for sites outside the narrow boundaries of galleries and museums. It began with ephemeral enhancements or traces left in deserted landscapes, in the deserts of America, or in the moors of Scotland. Following this were spectacular earthen sculptures of gigantic proportions, some of which are still in the process of completion today. One distinguishing feature of Land Art is its critical preoccupation with the tradition of sculpture. Sculpture can now be an earthwork excavation, a field of metal poles, a buried hut, a trace in the grass, or even a book. Another of the movement's special characteristics is its emphasis on site-specific, outdoor works intended to lastingly alter our perception of places, and to set new parameters in art production and reception. Artists included: Carl Andre, Alice Aycock, Herbert Bayer, Christo & Jeanne Claude, Walter De Maria, Agnes Denes, Jan Dibbets, Hamish Fulton, Andy Goldsworthy, Michael Heizer, Nancy Holt, Peter Hutchinson, Patricia Johanson, Dani Karavan, Richard Long, Mary Miss, Robert Morris, Dennis Oppenheim, Charles Ross, Robert Smithson, Alan Sonfist, James Turrell Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre series features: a detailed introduction with approximately 35 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.) that took place during the time period a selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work and brief biography of the artist as well as additional information such as a referencework, portrait of the artist, and/or citations

The late Albert Elsen was the first American scholar to study seriously the work of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the person most responsible for a revival of interest in the artist as a modern innovator--after years during which the sculpture had been dismissed as so much Victorian bathos. After a fortuitous meeting with the financier, philanthropist, and art collector B. Gerald Cantor, Elsen helped Cantor to build up a major collection of Rodin's work. A large part of this collection, consisting of more than 200 pieces, was donated to the Stanford Museum by Mr. Cantor, who died recently. In size it is surpassed only the by the Musee Rodin in Paris and rivaled only by the collection in Philadelphia. In scope the collection is unique in having been carefully selected to present a balanced view of Rodin's work throughout his life. Rodin's Art encompasses a lifetime's thoughts on Rodin's career, surveying the artist's accomplishments through the detailed discussion of each object in the collection. It will begin with essays on the formation of the collection, the reception of Rodin's work, and his casting techniques. The entries that follow are arranged topically and include extensive discussions of Rodin's major projects.

Joseph Beuys's work continues to influence and inspire artists and thinkers around the world--in areas from organizational learning, direct democracy, and new forms of money, to new methods of art education and the practice of "ecological art."

Volker Harlan--a close colleague of Beuys--whose own work also explores substance and sacrament--talked with Beuys about the deeper motivations and insights behind "social sculpture" and his expanded view of art. These profound reflections, complemented by Harlan's thoughtful essays, give a sense of the interconnected nature of all life forms and provide the basis for a path toward a future that is ecologically sustainable.

What is Art? features more than forty illustrations.
"I know that from him [Rudolf Steiner] a mission was given to me to gradually remove people's alienation and mistrust toward the supersensible through my means. In political thinking--the field I have to be working on daily--it is a matter of realizing the Threefold Social Order as quickly as possible." --Joseph Beuys, in a letter to Manfred Schradi, October 21, 1971

This French-born artist emigrated to the United States in 1938. Bourgeois has produced a body of work that spans more than five decades, including over 25 worldwide exhibitions in 2005 alone. Famous for her highly experimental and autobiographical sculptures, Bourgeois's work also includes intimate drawings, paintings, and personal writings. She is a pioneer in tackling issues of empowerment, sexuality, and the roles of women in her diverse oeuvre. Her art can be found in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Pompidou Center in Paris. In 1993, Bourgeois represented the United States at the Venice Biennial. Louise Bourgeois presents the artist's long and productive career through a series of essays: a retrospective text, an interview, an analysis, and over 150 images that represent the totality of the artist's output from her earliest work to her most recent projects. This comprehensive volume with its innovative design pays tribute to an original and influential artist and is an essential addition to every contemporary art-lover's collection.

The Art of the Scythians: The Interpenetration of Cultures at the Edge of the Hellenic World (Handbook of Oriental Studies, Vol 2)

This volume considers the art of the Scythians of the northern littoral of the Black Sea, as that art was expressed in gold, silver, bronze, and bone. Appearing by the seventh century B.C. at the edge of an expanding Hellenic world, the history and art of the Scythians must be considered within a context that recognizes the sources of Scythian culture in the Eurasian Steppe as well as the historical contingency of West Asia and the Greek colonies. By approaching the understanding of artistic traditions in terms of an evolving process, rooted in an archaic steppe culture but ultimately shaped by the confrontation of Near Eastern, Hellenic and Hellenistic tastes, this discussion goes beyond the traditional location of Scythian art as a subset of Greek goldwork. Particular consideration is given to the gradual transformation of object types and styles, from their reflection of archaic zoomorphic representations in carved bone, wood and bronze, to traditions expressive of Hellenized tastes and sensibilities, in gold and silver. By examining in detail individual objects, as well as classes of objects, this volume articulates a specifically Scythian stylistic and iconographic tradition, and a specifically Scythian contribution to the working of precious metals, related to but ultimately distinguishable from the goldworking traditions of Achaemenid Iran, late Classical Greece, and the larger Hellenistic world. This volume offers substantial bibliography relating to the extensive research on Scythian art, archaeology, and history, published in the Russian and Ukrainian languages over the last 150 years.

With more than 130 works created during the past decade, The Fine Art of Wood celebrates a pivotal artistic breakthrough: artists working in wood now claim the same freedom of expression long enjoyed by ceramists and glass artists. These innovative new pieces, which feature strikingly handsome shapes, unusual finishes, and woods from every corner of the world, have been beautifully photographed and reproduced here in conjunction with an upcoming exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
The book's intelligent introduction also breaks new ground, tracing the evolution of these works away from traditional crafts and putting them in the aesthetic context of the fine arts by persuasively linking them to such recent movements as Pop art and Minimalism. An extensive catalog section spotlights the visual pleasures of the works themselves, by artists ranging from David Ellsworth, Ron Kent, and Mark Lindquist to Rude Osolnick and Bob Stocksdale.

One-hundred years ago, Einstein solved the elemental mystery of the nature of light: it is both an electromagnetic wave and a stream of particles. It is a form of energy that moves at a speed of 299.792.458 m/s. It is a medium like no other, and nothing has revolutionized and democratized our world in the way that the control of electric light has.~We live in cities and gardens of light. For almost a century, artists have been working with light bulbs, fluorescent and neon, spotlights or LEDs, to cultivate these gardens. Light Art. Artificial Light offers a broad overview of the development of this genre, from the pioneers of light art in the 1920s to the immersive, interactive environments of ZERO, GRAV, Gruppo T and Gruppo N. Outstanding contemporary pieces, fascinating, profound illuminated spheres, ironic cross-references and plays of filigreed light complete this glowing spectrum of work. Featured artists include Vito Acconci, Olafur Eliasson, Tracey Emin, Dan Flavin, Zaha Hadid, Jenny Holzer, Mike Kelley, Julio Le Parc, Mario Merz, László Moholy-Nagy, Bruce Nauman, Jorge Pardo, Tobias Rehberger, Anselm Reyle, Jason Rhoades, Keith Sonnier, Yves Tinguely, James Turrell and Chen Zhen.

Fire and Form: The Art of Contemporary Glass

South Florida is home to some of the world’s premier private collections of studio glass, collections whose abundance, diversity, and quality are celebrated in Fire and Form. This volume features more than 100 works by 31 of the best-known American and European glass artists of our time, including Jaroslava Brychtova, Dale Chihuly, Dan Dailey, Stanislav Libensky, William Morris, Tom Patti, Lino Tagliapietra, and many others.
In his thoughtful and informative essay, curator and renowned glass scholar William Warmus identifies four prominent themes in the relatively recent development of studio glass (since 1960) that provide a framework for exploring the rich variety of works presented in this book. The first theme is what Warmus has called the particular affinity between nature and the making of glass: "Where nature creates a heart, the glass artist creates a heart-felt vessel." The second is the ability of glass, equally to that of painting and sculpture, to convey the power of abstraction and color. A third theme is the prevalent use of glass--sometimes called the new bronze--to depict the human figure and animal forms. The final section deals with the theatrical nature of installations and environmental sculptures, demonstrating the surprising capability of glass to impose itself physically and emotionally on the space we inhabit, altering our very perception of it.
Warmus also provides a brief history of glass as an art form dating back to ancient Egypt, and places contemporary glass within the context of contemporary art and theory at large. In addition, the book includes selected artists’ bibliographies and a chronological bibliography of contemporary glass that lists key historical events, general trends and developments, and important publications. Fire and Form offers a unique perspective on this vital and "intoxicating" medium, and its publication is a welcome event for all lovers of glass--those who make it, those who collect it, and those who admire it.

Judith Scott, a fifty-five year old woman with Down's Syndrome, has spent the past ten years producing a series of totally non-functional objects - obsessively wrapped, knotted, braided fiber masses revealing hints of concealed scavenged objects, pieces which loom large and wraithlike or sit as small tightly wound secrets. Her works, to us, appear to be works of Outsider Art sculpture, except that the notion of sculpture is far beyond her understanding. As well as being mentally disabled, Judith cannot hear or speak, and she hs little concept of language. There is no way of asking her what she is doing, yet her compulsive involvement with the shaping of forms in space seems to imply that at some level she knows. Does serious mental retardation invariably preclude the creation of true works of art? Is it plausible to imagine an artist of stature emerging in the context of massively impaired intellectual development?
This lovely hardcover book is illustrated with beautiful color photographs by internationally renowned photographer Leon Borensztein.

The process of designing jewelry has never before been explored in a book. It has taken the combined talents of three top jewelry designers, including a profess who teaches the skill to jewelry students, to create this beautiful and practical step-by-step format. Starting with a fully illustrated discussion of design principles and metal and stone rendering techniques, this volume then presents progressive detailed sketches and finished drawings of many varieties of ring and earring designs. From such drawings the manufacturing jeweler can assemble the objects themselves. This book teaches one how to create those drawings. "It is a book that I have searched for, in vain, for many years. It is both the first and undoubtedly the best, and will remain the best for many years. This book is destined to become the bible of the designer, the guide of the artisan, and the companion of the jewelry lover." Samuel Beizer, Chairman, Jewelry Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.

The Temptation: Edgar Tolson and the Genesis of Twentieth-Century Folk Art

Why, beginning in the late 1960s, did expressive objects made by poor people come to be regarded as "twentieth-century folk art," increasingly sought after by the middle class and the wealthy? Julia Ardery explores that question through the life story of Kentucky woodcarver Edgar Tolson (1904-1984) and the evolving public reception of his poplar "dolls."
The Temptation presents a vivid chronicle of folk art's ascendancy in the late twentieth century, enlivened by the voices and opinions of diverse participants in the folk art scene. Drawing on in-depth interviews with collectors and dealers, museum and auction house officials, and Tolson's own family members and friends, the book traces a twenty-year tug-of-war over the definition, sale, and interpretation of folk art. Unlike earlier studies, Ardery's work also links the popularity of folk art to larger historical forces: the civil rights movement and the War on Poverty in Appalachia, government and corporate arts sponsorship, developments in arts education, and an expanded art market.
Well illustrated and impeccably documented, The Temptation offers an engaging account of how a generation both reflected and reinforced its ideals through its fascination with crayon drawings, quilts, and wooden dolls.

The Traditional Art of the Mask: Carving a Transformation Mask

This is rare look into the traditional ways of creating the beautiful masks that have brought such admiration to the native American carvers of the Pacific Northwest. The masks of the Kwakiutl people of the Pacific Northwest are noted around the world for their bold colorful designs. Used for dramatic recreations of the ancestors adventures, they carry a depth of social, historical, and religious meaning. Lelooska has spent a lifetime creating these masks, a privilege bestowed upon him by the Kwakiutl. He has recreated many of the ceremonial masks which were lost or destroyed when the potlach was, for a time, outlawed. His masks are used in the traditional dances both at the revived gatherings and at recreations of the dances presented by the Lelooska Foundation in Ariel, Washington. Now he shares the traditional carving techniques with carvers everywhere. The Kwakiutl carvers are known particular for their transformation or opening masks, which change or open to reveal a second, inner mask. The mask carved in this new book is just such a mask, beautiful in its design and its complexity. Each step is illustrated and described to help the carver recreate the mask on his or her own. This is a unique and much awaited book by one of Americas foremost artists.
Their found and recycled materials are reincarnated to create clothing, jewelry, toys, artworks, and useful household objects, such as a measuring scale made of two sardine cans. Focusing on the folk art practices of several cultures, this book is a celebration of the transformative genius of these artists, as well as an exploration of the diverse environments--from Ecuador and Mexico to Senegal and the U.S.--in which they live and work.

Installation Art in the New Millennium: The Empire of the Senses

"Wonderfully illustrated and wide-ranging...does an excellent job of showing the charged, dynamic conversation taking place between artist and audience." —Library Journal
Over the past decade Installation art has achieved mainstream status within contemporary visual culture. Its ascendancy has given rise to new terms and affected not just art but also fashion, movie design, and club culture.
The new "immersive" Installation reflects a desire for sensual pleasure, as the viewer is totally enveloped in a hermetic and narcissistic artwork, as illustrated by the American artist Doug Aitken and the Japanese artist Kazuo Katase, among others. New dynamics have developed between the artist and institutions, and Installation is more than ever an open-ended experiment that transforms the museum into a cultural laboratory, as seen in the work of Hans Haacke. Installation refuses to accept fixed boundaries, and practitioners, such as the Mexican Jose Dávila, are now looking to forge relationships of exchange on a global level, collaborating with specialists in other non-art areas. In a rapidly changing world, time and memory become key concerns, and artists such as Christian Boltanksi and Damien Hirst prefer to construct their own spaces of memory. The culmination of these processes has made the audience itself the key site of the Installation, as witnessed in the works of Vanessa Beecroft, Gary Hill, Mariko Mori, and Bill Viola.
Introduced by Jonathan Crary, Professor of Art History, Columbia University, the book is completed by a chronology, details on the works included in the book, further reading, and an index. 317 illustrations, 268 in color.
