| This local focus show curated by Guest Curator Delilah Montoya is held in conjunction with the grand opening of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The show presents the work of the Nuevomexicano, a subculture in the twenty-first century, and features an array of work by local New Mexican artists including Teresa Archuleta, Francisco LeFebre, Pola Lopez, Lydia Madrid, Gloria Maya, Francis Rivera, Pedro Romero, Fredrico Vigil, and PAZ. The exhibit includes an ofrenda by the group MEZCLA (Xilo Garcia, Oscar Lozoya, Delilah Montoya, Bernadette Rodriguez, Patricio Trujillo Tlacaelel, and Mike 3sixty). The show is en memoria de Walter Baca (1947-1993), who is credited with engendering Chicano themes into the paño folk art tradition. | ![]() Ofrenda by MEZCLA |

| Panel and Performance Night (Thursday, October 12, 5:30pm): In honor of Día de la Raza, Curator Delilah Montoya and several of the artists in the show will discuss Chicano arts issues with the public. Día de la Raza, or "Day of the Race," celebrates the mixture of people, races, and cultures of the Americas and their tenacity of spirit. The panel discussion will be followed by a performance of music and poetry presented as part of the Albuquerque Museum's performance series called Lo Maduro de la Cultura. | |
| Día de los Muertos Celebration (Thursday, November 2, 6-9pm): This closing reception for the exhibition is a free community celebration featuring live music, traditional foods, costumes, and fun for the whole family. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday for remembering and honoring the dead. On this day, the living reach out by offering the deceased something that was enjoyed during life. Día de los Muertos has also become a means of cultural and artistic expression for the Latino community. | |
