| Each year, Magnifico's Visual Arts Committee selects a few Albuquerque
artists to honor for their outstanding accomplishments in their work and
their contributions to our arts community. This year, Magnifico honors mixed
media artist Dorothy Grandbois, photographer Patrick Nagatani, and sculptor
Karl Stalnaker. This honors exhibit at 516 Magnifico Artspace is in conjunction
with Magnifico's tenth annual regional juried exhibition called Why Albuquerque? An Inquiry Into Art and Place, which
will take place at The Albuquerque Museum (Sept. 24 - Oct. 3). Work by each
of these honors artists will also be featured in the Museum exhibition. |

Dorothy Grandbois |
Lucy Lippard says, "Dorothy Grandbois (Turtle Mountain
Chippewa)...deals with those tragic turn-of-the-century photographs advertising
assimilation. She contrasts them with newer, end-of-the-century dilemmas
such as teen motherhood, humanizing, giving faces to protagonists." |

the body. Using photographic images from weight-lifting magazines, he presents
what art critic Kathleen Whitney calls "a montage of idealized realities." |

Karl Stalnaker |
Karl Stalnaker's quirky sculptures merge found materials from
